Looking Out for Taxpayers
As a participant in the Medicare Part D prescription drug program, the Fox Insurance Company received money from the federal Treasury with the understanding that it would pay legitimate claims made by Medicare providers.
Fox Insurance was terminated from the Medicare prescription drug program on March 9, 2010, after refusing to pay properly submitted claims. Yet, the company already had received more than $60 million in taxpayer dollars as a participant in the program.
This summer, as part of my ongoing effort to hold insurance companies accountable and safeguard tax dollars, I'm working to make sure Fox Insurance pays Medicare prescription drug providers the millions of dollars it owes for Medicare beneficiaries’ prescription drug benefit claims.
I want to know how much of this money Fox Insurance was still holding while continuing to deny payment for legitimate claims, so Senator Baucus and I sent a letter to the chief executive officer of the company asking for a full accounting.
Our inquiry got results. Fox Insurance began paying claims within days of receiving our letter. I intend to continue vigorous oversight of this situation until every valid claim is settled and every taxpayer dollar is brought into account.
The text of our letter is available here.
