WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa said today that Nicholas Alan Fox of Clive has received an appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Great Neck, N.Y., for the 2015-2016 school year.

Fox is the son of Amy and John Fox.  He will graduate in May from Valley High School.  Fox is a member of the Greater Des Moines’ Youth Leadership Initiative.  He has participated in the National Student Leadership Conference and the American Legion Hawkeye Boys State.  Fox has served as captain of the men’s swim team and the Valley/Dowling High School Water Polo Club.  Fox also earned a varsity letter for swim team and is a state qualifier.

“Admission to the service academies is highly competitive and a great honor,” Grassley said.  “Students work very hard to earn this kind of opportunity.  I wish Nicholas well and thank him for his commitment to serve our nation.”

Fox was among the 37 Iowans Grassley nominated this year for appointments to the U.S. service academies.  Upon receiving an appointment, the student then decides whether to attend the academy.  Information about seeking nominations can be found on Grassley’s website.

For more than 200 years, these academies have educated and trained individuals to lead and command the U.S. armed forces.
