WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded $492,507 to the University of Iowa and Cerro Gordo County.
The University of Iowa received a $375,000 grant through the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The university will use the funds to study neonatal growth and the neurodevelopmental origins of hypertension.
Cerro Gordo County entered into a $117,507 cooperative agreement with the National Center for Environmental Health. Cerro Gordo County will use the funds to study arsenic in county wells and the distribution of ground water.
Each year, thousands of local Iowa organizations, colleges and universities, individuals and state agencies apply for competitive grants from the federal government. The funding is then awarded based on each local organization or individual’s ability to meet criteria set by the federal entity.
