Grassley: $138,434 Released to Iowa Legal Aid from U.S. Department of Justice

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley today said that the U.S. Department of Justice has released a $79,719 grant to Iowa Legal Aid in Des Moines through the Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program. The funding was included in the fiscal 2008 appropriations process.

The funds will help Iowa Legal Aid improve the lives of low–income and other vulnerable Iowans who have been victimized or have legal problems that impact their health by providing direct legal assistance, legal education and referral of cases to private attorneys participating in Iowa Legal Aid’s Volunteer Lawyers Project or other human services agencies.

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program assists local communities in improving the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts including training and technical assistance programs strategically targeted to address local needs.
