Grassley Announces Grants to 12 Iowa Fire Departments

? Sen. Chuck Grassley announced today that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded a total of $506,321 to 12 fire departments in Iowa through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

Fire Operations and Fire Safety grants have been awarded to the fire departments in Bancroft, Granville, Holland, Hospers, Jamaica, Matlock, Prairieburg, Rinsted, Rock Valley, Tripoli, Truesdale and Urbandale. These funds can be used to train firefighting personnel, establish wellness and fitness programs for firefighters, and purchase firefighting equipment and personal protective equipment.

"Making sure that our firefighters have the equipment they need will make our communities safer," Grassley said. "This funding will help make sure that Iowa's firefighters are ready to respond to emergencies and protect citizens in these communities."

This funding is part of the sixth round of funding through the 2003 Assistance for Firefighters Grant Program, which will distribute $750 million in assistance to firefighters throughout the year. Grassley said that FEMA received nearly 20,000 applications for grant awards this year.
