Grassley Announces Grants for Eight Iowa Fire Departments

? Sen. Chuck Grassley announced today that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded a total of $503,224 to eight fire departments in Iowa through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

Fire Operations and Fire Safety grants have been awarded to Anamosa, Cylinder, Hawkeye, Jewell, Primghar and Waucoma. These funds can be used to train firefighting personnel, establish wellness and fitness programs for firefighters, and purchase firefighting equipment and personal protective equipment.

The communities of Allerton and Dunkerton have been awarded grants through the Firefighting Vehicles program. These funds will be used to purchase new firefighting vehicle.

"Firefighters are a critical part of Iowa's communities and we need to make sure they are adequately equipped to respond to emergencies," Grassley said. "This funding will help make sure they have the equipment they need to protect area citizens."

This funding is part of the third round of funding through the 2003 Assistance for Firefighters Grant Program, which will distribute $750 million in assistance to firefighters throughout the year. Grassley said that FEMA received nearly 20,000 applications for grant awards this year.
