WASHINGTON – Amid National Sunshine Week, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) is spotlighting federal whistleblower disclosure policies and demanding agencies take action to ensure employees know their rights to report wrongdoing.
By law, all federal agency nondisclosure policies, forms and agreements must contain an “anti-gag” provision, which informs employees of their right to report waste, fraud or abuse to Congress and federal oversight authorities without retaliation. However, some agencies have illegally omitted this provision. Grassley wrote every federal agency with statutory Inspectors General (IG), as well as two Inspectors General Councils, requesting each IG review their respective agency’s nondisclosure policy to ensure it complies with the law.
“The importance of whistleblowers knowing their rights under the law cannot be stated enough, and federal agencies should encourage their employees to disclose allegations of waste, fraud and abuse,” Grassley wrote. “Federal agencies cannot be allowed to conceal their wrongdoing behind illegal non-disclosure policies and related actions.”
Grassley is the co-founder and co-chair of the Senate Whistleblower Protection Caucus.
