BUTLER COUNTY, IOWA – U.S. Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), along with U.S. Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa), Ashley Hinson (R-Iowa), Zach Nunn (R-Iowa) and Randy Feenstra (R-Iowa), today called on President Joe Biden to swiftly grant Governor Kim Reynolds’ Major Disaster Declaration request for the Mississippi River flooding that occurred this spring. Rapid snow melt caused severe flooding in seven Iowa counties between April 24 and May 13, resulting in significant damage to public infrastructure and private property.
“The Governor has determined that this incident is of such severity and magnitude that effective response is beyond the capabilities of the State and affected local governments, and supplementary federal assistance is necessary.” the lawmakers wrote.

Dear Mr. President,
We respectfully ask that you promptly grant the request made by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds for a major disaster declaration for the State of Iowa as a result of rapid snow melt that produced severe flooding in Iowa from April 24 through May 13, 2023. This flooding caused significant damage to public infrastructure and private property.
Governor Reynolds has requested Hazard Mitigation statewide and activation of the Public Assistance Program. Public Assistance was requested for Allamakee, Clayton, Des Moines, Dubuque, Jackson, Lee and Scott counties.
The Governor has determined that this incident is of such severity and magnitude that effective response is beyond the capabilities of the State and affected local governments, and supplementary federal assistance is necessary.
