Grassley Offers Opportunities to Iowa College Students, New Graduates


Sen. Chuck Grassley today encouraged college students and new graduates inIowa to apply for spring semester internships.

The internships are available to Iowans who commit to working from mid-January through May,either in Grassley's office in Washington, D.C., or in one of the six constituent service offices hemaintains in Iowa.

Grassley said the internships are "very good opportunities for college students and new graduatesto gain work experience while learning about the legislative branch of our federal government." Hesaid that applications for the next internship session are due November 1.

Interns for Grassley are assigned to help permanent staff members who have responsibilities fortracking legislation, providing constituent services, supplying information to Iowa media outlets, andcompleting administrative work. Grassley said congressional interns also have opportunities toattend committee hearings and information briefings at the Library of Congress. In many cases,colleges and universities recognize the semester-long internship for college credit.

"I encourage students of all areas of study to consider the value of learning more about the processof representative government. Working in a Senate office can enhance a college education and makestudents more competitive job applicants when they graduate. Several of my current, permanentstaff members are former interns," Grassley said.

Copies also can be obtained in the placement offices of Iowa colleges and universities, as well as inGrassley's offices in Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Davenport, Des Moines, Sioux City, andWaterloo.
