Grassley said the program he offers is available to Iowans who commit to working from May 22 to June 30, or July 5 to August 11, either in Washington, D.C., or in one of the six constituent service offices he maintains in Iowa.
In addition, students making plans for the fall semester are invited to apply for a 15-week internship in Washington from September 5 to December 15. In many cases, colleges and universities recognize the semester-long internship for college credit.
Grassley said the internships are "very good opportunities for college students and new graduates to gain work experience while learning about the legislative branch of our federal government." Applications for summer internships are due March 31. Fall internship applications are due June 15.
Interns for Grassley are assigned to help permanent staff members who have responsibilities for tracking legislation, providing constituent services, supplying information to Iowa media outlets, and completing administrative work. Grassley said congressional interns also have opportunities to attend committee hearings and information briefings at the Library of Congress.
"I encourage students of all areas of study to consider the value of learning more about the process of representative government. Working in a Senate office can enhance a college education and make students more competitive job applicants when they graduate. Several of my current, permanent staff members are former interns," Grassley said.
Application forms for internships in the Grassley office are available at http://grassley.senate.gov/intern.
Copies also can be obtained in the placement offices of Iowa colleges and universities, as well as in Grassley's offices in Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Davenport, Des Moines, Sioux City, and Waterloo. In addition, an application may be requested by writing to: Sen. Chuck Grassley, 135 Hart Office Building, Washington, D.C. 20510-1501, or to chuck_grassley@grassley.senate.gov.
