The internships are available to Iowans who commit to working either a six-week summer session or September through December.
Grassley said the internships are "good opportunities for college students and new graduates to gain work experience while learning about the legislative branch of our federal government." He said that applications for summer internships are due March 15. College students planning for the fall semester should submit their internship applications by June 15.
Interns for Grassley are assigned to help permanent staff members who have responsibilities for developing and monitoring legislation, providing constituent services, supplying information to news organizations, and completing administrative work. Grassley said congressional interns also have opportunities to attend committee hearings and information briefings. In many cases, colleges and universities recognize the semester-long internship for college credit.
"I encourage students of all areas of study to consider the value of learning more about the federal government and, in particular, the process of representative government. Working in a Senate office can enhance a college education and make students more competitive job applicants when they graduate. Several of my current staff members are former interns," Grassley said.
Application forms for internships in the Grassley office are available at grassley.senate.gov/intern, or by writing to Sen. Grassley at 135 Hart Office Building, Washington, D.C. 20510-1501, or chuck_grassley@grassley.senate.gov.
Copies also can be obtained in the placement offices of Iowa colleges and universities, as well as in Grassley's offices in Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Davenport, Des Moines, Sioux City, and Waterloo.
