Grassley: President Nominates Charles Larson For Federal Prosecutor in Iowa

? Sen. Chuck Grassley announced today that President Bush has nominated Charles Larson Sr., to be U.S. Attorney for the northern district of Iowa.

"Charles Larson is extremely qualified to be one of the state's lead federal prosecutors," Grassley said. "Iowans will be well-served by his past work as U.S. Attorney and extensive background in law enforcement."

Larson was U.S. attorney in Iowa's northern district from 1986 to 1993. He served as the drug enforcement and abuse prevention coordinator for the Governor's Alliance on Substance Abuse from 1993 to 1998. Since 1998, he has been chairman of the Iowa Board of Parole.

Larson was one of three candidates Grassley forwarded to the president in April for consideration. Grassley said Larson's nomination will now go to the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will schedule a confirmation hearing.

U.S. Attorneys prosecute federal criminal and civil rights cases. They also are responsible for collecting debts the federal government has been unable to collect through administrative procedures.
