Hagel and Grassley Praise Inclusion of Renewable Fuels in Energy Legislation

D.C. ? The following is a joint statement by U.S. Senators Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA).

"We want to applaud the Majority Leader for including in his energy legislation a Renewable Fuel Standard which is very similar to that which Senate Energy Committee Republicans had agreed to several weeks ago. Regrettably, the majority refused to allow the Senate Energy Committee to approve comprehensive energy legislation before the full Senate considers this important matter.

The Senate Republican Leadership and the Ranking Republican on the Energy Committee, Senator Murkowski, have stated their commitment to the inclusion of a Renewable Fuel Standard in any final energy bill. Now with the Senate Democratic leadership committed to Renewable Fuel Standard, we are very confident of the outcome.

These commitments ensure that a Senate energy bill will include a significant role for renewable fuels. We look forward to a full debate in the Senate on comprehensive energy legislation as soon as possible. There are few issues more critical to the future of our nation than to address America's energy needs, reduce our dangerous reliance on foreign oil, and expand our use of alternative sources of energy.

Renewable fuels, such as ethanol and biodiesel, will improve our air quality, strengthen our national security, reduce our trade deficit, decrease dependancy on foreign oil, and create an expanded market for America's agricultural products. We appreciate the leadership of Senator Murkowski in pushing for consideration of a Senate energy bill and look forward to passing legislation with a strong Renewal Fuel Standard."
