More Than $1.1 Million to the Council Bluffs Community Health Center

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley today said that the Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a $1,137,592 competitive grant to the Council Bluffs Community Health Center.

“Community health centers provide primary and preventive health care services to medically underserved areas,” Grassley said. “It’s important for Council Bluffs residents that these beneficial services will continue.”

Grassley co-sponsored the Health Centers Renewal Act of 2007 which reauthorized the health centers program for another five years and strengthened and expanded health centers in order to care for nearly 30 million patients.  It became law October 8, 2008.  Many Iowa communities have benefitted from the federal investment of health centers, and other communities are looking to start new centers.

Each year, thousands of local Iowa organizations, colleges and universities, individuals and state agencies apply for competitive grants from the federal government.  The funding is then awarded based on each local organization or individual’s ability to meet criteria set by the federal entity.
