More Than $1.25 Million to 13 Iowa Fire Departments from FEMA


WASHINGTON – Chuck Grassley said that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded 13 competitive grants totaling $1,250,566 to Iowa Fire Departments through the Assistance to Firefighters Grants’ Operations and Safety and Vehicle Acquisition Programs.


“Day in and day out, firefighters put their lives on the line for the good of the community,” Grassley said. “It’s important that firefighters have the necessary equipment and training to help keep the community safe.”


FEMA will distribute the money as shown below ordered alphabetically by town.


Through the Operations and Safety Program:


•    Brandon Fire Department in Brandon will receive $27,230.

•    Dayton Fire Department in Dayton will receive $60,230.

•    Des Moines Fire Department in Des Moines will receive $451,712.

•    Reading - Cedar Fire Department in Farnhamville will receive $22,270.

•    Grimes Fire and Rescue in Grimes will receive $8,004.

•    Guttenberg Fire Department/Clayton County Communications Board in Guttenberg will receive $320,055.

•    Humeston Fire Department in Humeston will receive $29,235.

•    Nashua Fire Department in Nashua will receive $54,320.

•    Onawa Volunteer Fire Department in Onawa will receive $50,566.

•    Rockwell Volunteer Fire Department in Rockwell will receive $59,850.

•    Sioux City Fire Department in Sioux City will receive $136,000.

•    West Union Fire Department in West Union will receive $20,644.

•    Westside Fire Department in Westside will receive $10,450.


The Assistance to Firefighters Grants Operations and Safety Program supplements training, equipment, personal protective equipment, wellness and fitness, and health and safety modifications to stations and facilities.


Each year, thousands of local Iowa organizations, colleges and universities, individuals and state agencies apply for competitive grants from the federal government.  The funding is then awarded based on each local organization or individual’s ability to meet criteria set by the federal entity.
