BUTLER COUNTY, IOWA – The cities of Cedar Rapids and Davenport will receive significant federal funding to reinforce aging transportation infrastructure and enhance flood and natural disaster resiliency. Cedar Rapids will receive $56,400,000 and Davenport will receive $13,119,400, respectively. Both grants will be administered through the Promoting Resilient Operations for Transformative, Efficient and Cost-saving Transportation Program (PROTECT) Program, authorized by the Grassley-supported Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).
“The health and safety of our communities rely heavily on sound infrastructure. These federal dollars will go a long way to assist the cities of Davenport and Cedar Rapids in their efforts to boost public safety and flood resilience,” Grassley said. “I’m glad to see Iowans’ hard-earned tax dollars continue to return to our state and strengthen our communities.”
Cedar Rapids:
The $56,400,000 award will be used to replace the 86-year-old Arc of Justice Bridge with a new long span, cable-stayed bridge. This upgrade will reduce crashes and congestion, expand active transportation pathways, spur economic activity in the region and ensure access for residents and emergency services, especially in the event of extreme flooding events.
Davenport:
The $13,119,400 award will go towards multiple flood mitigation projects, including the creation of permanent flood detour routes, raising and reconstructing existing streets and reconfiguring pedestrian infrastructure at high-traffic intersections.
