Reported Agreement with Saddam Hussein

Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa today issued the following statement regarding the agreement reached by U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan with Saddam Hussein, and commented upon this afternoon by President Bill Clinton.

"I hope the agreement is successful because I don't want to go to war. However, we have yet to see the fine print, and I remain cautiously optimistic. Furthermore, with Saddam Hussein, actions are more important than words. Today's report is one thing, but whether or not he actually allows unconditional U.N. inspections is another issue altogether. There is no evidence that Saddam Hussein respects the rule of law. To date, he has failed to fully live up to international agreements, including the peace agreement he signed after the Gulf War and the U.N. inspection procedures in place since 1992. The bottom line is, we cannot let down our guard and accept a phony settlement. It will take more time to know if the latest crisis with Iraq has passed."
