Senator Chuck Grassley made the following comment after the U.S. Department of Justice responded to a letter sent by the Iowa congressional delegation requesting DOJ ensure that special consideration be given to grant applications from state and local law enforcement in Iowa affected by the flooding and tornadoes. In its response, the department stated it is providing a six-month extension to the close-out date of any existing grants in flood affected areas and extended the deadline for submission of Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant Applications.
The Justice Departmentsaid it began working with Iowa communities affected by flooding by implementing its emergency incident support which was developed after hurricane Katrina to provide a range of assistance to impacted communities.
Grassley said that he will continue to make sure Iowa's state and local law enforcement receive the help needed due to flooding.
"Following the historic floods and tornados, we worked to ensure that Iowans were treated fairly and received the help they needed. The law enforcement community has had enough to deal with, the last thing they needed was to worry about deadlinesfor grants. I am encouraged by the department's willingness to comply with our requests and help keep Iowa communities safe."
