VIDEO: Grassley Discusses Judge Kavanaugh’s Qualifications
WASHINGTON – On the final day of Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing to be an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley sat down to speak about Judge Kavanaugh’s qualifications and the convincing case he made for Senate confirmation. The video can be found here and the transcript can be found below.
One of the most important constitutional functions that the Senate has is to confirm nominations of any president. And probably the most long-term consequences of our actions is for somebody to be on the Supreme Court because it’s a life-time appointment.
We have one of the most qualified people ever to be nominated to the Supreme Court, Judge Kavanaugh, on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals for 12 years. An outstanding record of interpreting law the way Congress passes it, not doing what some judges do, try to fill in the blanks and be super legislatures. Secondly, interpreting the Constitution according to the way it was written by the authors of the Constitution and thirdly, showing an outstanding understanding of people that come before him but not using his personal views, but just reading the law, what the law says and the facts of the case and making his judgement based upon that law.
Also I should say, he comes with outstanding recommendations from law clerks that he’s had, students he’s taught at Harvard and Yale and they all speak very highly of him being personable, being smart, but most importantly caring about people. He shows caring about people by being a coach for his girls’ basketball teams over a five or six year period of time so far. He’s also worked at congregate meals at his local Catholic church and he’s just a very down to Earth fella.
