Young Iowans Choosing to Serve

U.S. military academies provide remarkable educational and service opportunities for many young Americans.  The academies educate and train officers for the Army, Air Force, Navy, Merchant Marine and Coast Guard and give students the opportunity to serve while earning their college degree.  Upon graduation, alumni serve on active duty of the military, the Merchant Marine or the U.S. Coast Guard for a minimum of five years.

Admission to the U.S. service academies is highly competitive and a great honor.  In most instances, consideration for admission to the academies (except the U.S. Coast Guard Academy) requires a nomination from a member of Congress.   Anybody who is interested in attending a military academy can visit my website to find additional information about the selection criteria, and to find an application form.  After an exhaustive selection process from the many applications submitted to my office, I then nominate 10 outstanding Iowans to each of the academies.   The academy officials generally offer appointments to their institutions between January 1 and April 1.

The deadline is October 1 for young Iowans to submit their application to my office for the 2012-2013 school year, and is quickly approaching.

Every year I am amazed at the outstanding group of Iowa students who apply for academy nominations.  The quality of young people makes it a highly competitive selection process and makes narrowing the list of nominees a difficult task. It’s a wonderful testament to our state to see the talent, accomplishments, and drive of so many young Iowans year after year.
