If you’re a military veteran in Iowa with recent service or know someone who is, I hope you’ll read this piece.
Recognizing the outstanding military service of returning Iowa veterans and the challenges veterans can face after leaving military service, I wanted to offer an opportunity that taps into their civic-minded call to duty and helps veterans transition into their next chapter as private citizens.
This opportunity is a new fellowship in my office for Iowans with recent military service.
The program will help these veterans gain experience working with the public and providing constituent services.
It’s a means for the candidates to build a resume and make new contacts. It’s also a good venue for my office to have more eyes and ears devoted to serving Iowa veterans. My staff and I try our best but there’s always room to make sure we’re doing everything we can. No one knows as well how to serve a veteran than a fellow veteran.
The individuals in this position can expect to meet with veterans and veterans service organizations on my behalf. The individuals also will learn about working on constituent casework and correspondence in my state offices. There’s always substantive work in navigating federal agencies for paperwork and earned benefits.
I’d like to have two fellows, one in Des Moines and one in Cedar Rapids.
The program has tremendous potential, and I’m eager to get it started. I’m taking applications now. The form is available here. I hope you’ll spread the word so this fellowship gets off to a great start. Thank you.
