WASHINGTON – Chuck Grassley said today that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded competitive grants totaling $156,486 to Iowa Fire Departments through the Assistance to Firefighters Grants’ Fire Prevention and Safety Program.
“Day in and day out, firefighters put their lives on the line for the good of the community,” Grassley said. “By providing information to the public on fire safety, firefighters can help the community avert deaths and injuries in the future.”
FEMA will distribute the money as shown below ordered alphabetically by town.
•Denison Volunteer Fire Department in Denison will receive $100,297.
•Iowa City Fire Department in Iowa City will receive $26,189.
•Marion Fire Department in Marion will receive $5,832.
•Sioux City Fire Department in Sioux City will receive $24,168.
According to FEMA, the Assistance to Firefighters Grants’ Fire Prevention and Safety Program helps enhance the safety of the public and firefighters by reaching out to high-risk target groups and mitigating incidences of deaths and injuries caused by fire and fire-related hazards as well as helping fund firefighter safety research and development activities.
Each year, thousands of local Iowa organizations, colleges and universities, individuals and state agencies apply for competitive grants from the federal government. The funding is then awarded based on each local organization or individual’s ability to meet criteria set by the federal entity.
