WASHINGTON - Senator Chuck Grassley today said that the U.S. Department of Labor released $254,945 for dislocated workers in Newton that were affected by the closure of Whirlpool Corporation. The funds are through the National Emergency Grant program.
"This assistance will continue to help provide training and new skills to the workers at Maytag and Whirlpool so they can get back on their feet and compete for new jobs in the future," Grassley said.
The $254,945 from the U.S. Department of Labor is an incremental award, part of a larger supplemental National Emergency Grant for up to $680,802 approved on May 9, 2007.
National Emergency Grants provide supplemental dislocated worker funds to states, local boards, and other eligible entities in order to respond to the needs of dislocated workers and communities affected by major economic dislocations and other worker dislocation events which cannot be met with formula allotments.
