$516,705 to Iowa from U.S. Department of Justice

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley today said that the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women and Office of Justice Programs have awarded competitive grants totaling $516,705 to Iowa.

“These funds will help strengthen families and provide services and resources for victims of domestic, dating and sexual assault,” Grassley said.

The U.S. Department of Justice will distribute the funds as shown below.

• The Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence in Des Moines will receive $84,821 from the Office on Violence Against Women through the Grants to State Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Coalitions Program.

• The Siouxland Human Investment Partnership in Sioux City will receive $321,884 from the Office on Violence Against Women through the Transitional Housing Grant Program.

• Family Directions of Iowa in West Des Moines will receive $200,000 from the Office of Justice Programs to help provide evidence based family strengthening programs that address the protection of youth and children, build social skills and increase responsibility factors in adolescents.

The Grants to State Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Coalitions Program supports state coalition efforts to coordinate victim services to collaborate with other federal, state, and local entities to respond to violence against women issues.

The Transitional Housing Grant Program provides assistance to victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking who are homeless or in need of transitional housing, or other housing assistance, including short-term housing assistance and supportive services and for whom emergency shelter services or other crisis intervention services are unavailable or insufficient.

Each year, thousands of local Iowa organizations, colleges and universities, individuals and state agencies apply for competitive grants from the federal government.  The funding is then awarded based on each local organization or individual’s ability to meet criteria set by the federal entity.
