WASHINGTON- Chuck Grassley said today that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Office of Rural Development has awarded a $6,470 grant to Melrose through the Community Facility Grant Program.
The funds will be used to purchase an emergency generator and related equipment which will allow Melrose to use the community center as an emergency shelter.
“These funds should increase safety for the residents of Melrose, and will help community members feel more secure,” Grassley said.
According to the USDA, Community Facility Grant funds may be used to construct, enlarge, or improve community facilities for health care, public safety, and community services.
Each year, thousands of local Iowa organizations, colleges and universities, individuals and state agencies apply for competitive grants and loans from the federal government. The funding is then awarded based on each local organization or individual’s ability to meet criteria set by the federal entity.
