In a letter sent yesterday, Grassley said "the lack of meaningful competition and high airfares have both an immediate and long term impact on the economy of Iowa." He indicated that a hearing would help develop a consensus on what legislation is needed to address the issue.
Over the past year, Grassley has called upon officials at the Departments of Justice and Transportation to use their authority to investigate predatory pricing and other anti-competitive behavior when it is uncovered by investigators.
Most recently, Grassley expressed his profound disappointment that legislation to add additional slots at the slot-controlled airports was rejected by the House of Representatives. The legislation would have increased competition and given Iowans lower-priced access to their destinations.
