Anniversary of bipartisan tax relief

On June 7, 2001, President Bush signed the bipartisan tax relief package passed by Congress under the leadership of members including Sen. Chuck Grassley, who was chairman of the Committee on Finance when the legislation passed. Grassley, now ranking member of the committee, made the following comment on the anniversary.

"A year ago, tax relief came at just the right time. Rebate checks and other relief arrived just as the recession started to hit home. Taxpayers received the greatest amount of tax relief in a generation. They deserved it. And they continue to deserve it. Struggling families will have more money to make ends meet. Parents and students will be able to more easily afford a college education. A son finally getting a good paycheck after years of work will be able to better provide for his aging mother. A farmer can pass on the family farm without his children having to sell half the land to pay estate taxes. This anniversary marks the happy marriage of taxpayers and tax relief."
