The CHIP funding will allow the state of Iowa to expand Medicaid for all children under age 19 in families up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level ($21,500 for a family of four). Approximately 15,000 uninsured children will receive coverage under these funds. The program will also create a new plan called HAWK-I (Healthy and Well Kids in Iowa). This private/public partnership will reach an additional 42,000 children by funding coverage for children up to 185 percent of the poverty level ($30,500 for a family of four).
In response to the announcement, Sen. Grassley issued the following comment.
"More than 57,000 children in Iowa will benefit from the strong leadership by our state legislators, child health professionals, child care providers and parents in Iowa. Working together to develop an Iowa-based program to achieve health security for uninsured children in Iowa, they have qualified for over $156 million in federal matching funds. This will provide important health care benefits and promote overall well-being for our most vulnerable children. This action will help maintain Iowa's standing as the number one place to raise a family in the nation."
