RE:       Protestors in Sen. Grassley’s Des Moines Office

DA:      Mon., Febr. 26, 2007

This afternoon, protestors asking Sen. Grassley to vote against supplemental funding for American troops in Iraq visited Sen. Grassley’s office in Des Moines.  The protestors were asked to leave the office after delivering their message to staff for three reasons.  Sen. Grassley personally talked with representatives from the same group as they attended some of his 17 public town meetings in Iowa during the last week.  Second, the state offices maintained by Sen. Grassley do not handle policy questions.  They are open for casework and constituent services.  And third, while handling casework for Iowans, the Grassley staff honors the privacy rights of individuals and their families.  The offices aren’t large spaces, so there isn’t room to accommodate a group of visitors while also safeguarding the personal information of Iowans who are in need of Sen. Grassley’s help.
