Committees to Release Study on Tax Simplification

Event:media availability with Lindy Paull, chief of staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation, to release a tax simplification study

Date/time:Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at 3:45 p.m.

Location:215 Dirksen Senate Office Building

Description:As any taxpayer knows, the tax code is excessively complex. Millions of Americans spend hours struggling over tax forms. Professional help and do-it-yourself tax software cost billions of dollars. Taxpayers exhaust their patience and their resources simply trying to comply with the law. Sen. Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Committee on Finance, and Sen. Max Baucus, ranking Democrat, have scheduled a hearing for 10 a.m. Thursday to explore ways to make the tax code more simple and more fair for taxpayers at all income levels. The hearing will feature the release of a much-anticipated, congressionally mandated study on simplification from the Joint Committee on Taxation. The senators hope the study will be the catalyst for a fresh look at simplification.

Lindy Paull, chief of the staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation, will release an executive summary of the Joint Committee's simplification report in advance of the hearing and answer questions. A Grassley-Baucus statement will be available.
