Re: Economic stimulus package

Da: Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008

Sen. Chuck Grassley, ranking member of the Committee on Finance, today made the following comment on the economic stimulus package passed by the committee on a largely bipartisan vote.

"This is a good package. It’ll get money to consumers and incentives to businesses so they can buy equipment or add employees. By extending renewable energy incentives, we’ll help meet the demand for alternative energy. High oil prices helped to fuel the economic downturn. It’s good to offer alternatives to sky-high oil. The Finance Committee package also corrects a flaw in the House stimulus package. The House bill could allow illegal immigrants to receive tax rebate checks. The Senate package takes aggressive steps to shut down that possibility. And 20 million seniors will get the check, along with disabled veterans. On the concern that having a separate Senate bill from the House will cause delays in economic stimulus, the Senate so far has improved on the House bill. I think we’ll be able to get a final stimulus package on the President’s desk by Feb. 15."
