EPA Annoucement to Regulate Livestock Waste

Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa today commented on reports that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will regulate livestock waste. The only working farmer in the U.S. Senate, Grassley serves on the Senate Agriculture Committee.

"As reported, the new EPA regulations still are not as strong as Iowa law, so they are not displacing the Iowa legislature and the important role of state government in addressing this issue. I am also glad that by EPA taking action, they have clearly established that one federal agency will be making the decisions on regulating hog manure. There's no need to create jurisdiction for three or four federal agencies to tell family farmers how to manage manure and create the kind of bureaucratic chaos that farmers must endure on wetlands regulation. Furthermore, if it is confirmed that the threshold has not been changed by the EPA, it is very good news for the smaller producer. In Iowa, the problem is the mega-producer, and I want to make sure federal regulations do not infringe on the livelihoods of family farmers and their ability to compete. I look forward to a careful examination of the EPA regulations on April 2, during a hearing of the Senate Ag Committee."
