Senator Chuck Grassley today issued the following comment regarding the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) decision to allow food processors and meat packers to use the irradiation process on beef products.
"I applaud this long overdue decision to give our food processors another tool to protect the safety of our food supply. Many of the problems with meat safety are a result of bacteria that is not detected under the current inspection system. Irradiation provides the missing link in the inspection system. The FDA's decision will allow packers and food processors to voluntarily use this technique. The challenge now will be to educate the public on how irradiation is something that will help us protect food safety; it is not something to be feared.
"At the same time, I do want remind consumers that food preparation is the ultimate step in ensuring that the food you eat is safe."
Grassley is a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, and is the only working farmer in the United States Senate.
