Sen. Chuck Grassley was notified today of two U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) grants for Iowa. The Iowa Department of Corrections will be receiving $1,622,484 under the Violent Offender Incarceration (VOI) Tier One Program. The money will be used to increase space in Iowa prisons for violent offenders. The Governor's Alliance on Substance Abuse will receive $514,497 from the Residential Substance Abuse Treatment (RSAT) Program. According to the DoJ, these funds will be used to develop and implement residential substance abuse treatment programs within state and local prisons and jails. Additional information about the grants is attached. A comment from Grassley follows.
"I am please the Department of Justice has taken this action to help fight crime and drug use in Iowa. To be successful in the war against drugs, we must have a coordinated effort on the part of local, state and federal officials. We can't let the scourge of drugs ruin our communities, our way of life and the future for our children and grandchildren."
