Grassley: $120,000 to Iowa Public Television to Increase Childhood Literacy


  

            WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley announced today that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting has awarded a $120,000 grant to Iowa Public Television in Johnston through the Ready to Learn grant program. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is a private, non-profit corporation, created by Congress, to promote public telecommunications services.

           

“These funds will give Iowa Public Television the opportunity to help improve literacy to kidsaround the Des Moines area,” Grassley said.

 

            Iowa Public Television will develop and execute community engagement activities, promote and broadcast Ready to Learn children’s television programming and online content, distribute related products and materials and other activities to improve literacy and reading skills to more than 1,200 households.

 

            The Ready to Learn grant program which is funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation to harness the power of public television’s children’s programming to engage and teach high-poverty children between the ages of two and eight how to read.
