WASHINGTON – Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) this week met with 66 Iowa students who advanced to the final round of the National History Day Contest. The group discussed the students’ achievements and the importance of history.
“Iowa students’ hard work, ambition and intellect never fail to impress me,” Grassley said. “As a lifelong learner of history, I’m glad to see Iowa’s next generation committed to advancing the field, while exploring their interests. I look forward to seeing all they accomplish in the future.”
“Learning about the past helps prepare students for success, and it’s clear the futures of these outstanding Iowa students shine bright,” said Ernst. “I applaud the creativity, teamwork, and hours of research they have put into their projects and wish them all the best in the final stages of the competition.”

Background:
National History Day (NHD) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving history education. Each year, NHD holds an international history contest for students in grades 6 through 12. The students present research projects to be evaluated by professional historians and educators. Students who successfully compete at local and affiliate contests are invited to share their work at the national contest, held just outside of Washington at the University of Maryland.
Congress earlier this year presented members of World War II’s Ghost Army with the Congressional Gold Medal, after an Iowan’s winning NHD Project helped the troops gain recognition for their courageous service.
