WASHINGTON?– Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.) today reintroduced legislation to clarify the process for resolving cases of identity theft and social security number misuse. Grassley first co-led the Improving Social Security’s Service to Victims of Identity Theft Act as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee during the 116th Congress.
“Identity theft causes a great deal of stress. The last thing victims need when seeking assistance is to rehash the details for multiple federal agents, only to hang up the phone and feel like they got the runaround,” Grassley said. “Our legislation would ensure Americans have a single point of contact at the Social Security Agency to help them navigate identify theft claims.”
“Our commonsense, bipartisan bill cuts red tape and helps?Arizonans recover after being?targeted by scammers and more easily resolve their issues with the Social Security Administration,” Sinema said.?
When victims of identity theft reach out to a multi-office agency like the Social Security Administration (SSA) for help, they can get bumped from person to person without much progress towards resolution. By establishing a single contact for SSA-related identity theft cases, Grassley and Sinema’s bill would reduce obstacles for victims and improve agency efficiency.
Grassley and Sinema are joined by Finance Committee chairman Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and ranking member Mike Crapo (R-Idaho).
