Grassley Announces $838,568 for Iowa Fire Departments

15 Communities Receive Assistance to Firefighters Grants

? Sen. Chuck Grassley announced today that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded a total of $838,568 to 15 fire departments in Iowa through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. Fire Operations and Fire Safety grants have been awarded to the fire departments in Buffalo Center, Calmar, Charlotte, Clearfield, Farmington, Harpers Ferry, Ionia, Lohrville, Lovilia, Luana, Marne, Mingo, Mount Vernon, Shelby and Waterville. These funds can be used to train firefighting personnel, establish wellness and fitness programs for firefighters, and purchase firefighting equipment and personal protective equipment. "Making sure that our firefighters have the equipment they need is critically important," Grassley said. "This funding will make Iowa safer by helping to make sure that these firefighters are ready to respond to emergencies and protect citizens in these communities." This funding is part of the seventh round of funding through the 2003 Assistance for Firefighters Grant Program, which will distribute $750 million in assistance to firefighters throughout the year. Grassley said that FEMA received nearly 20,000 applications for grant awards this year.
