Sen. Chuck Grassley today announced that six young Iowans have been offered appointments to U.S. military academies.
"I'm proud of these outstanding students," Grassley said. "They've put forth a lot of effort to achieve this goal and I'm happy to see that their hard work has been rewarded."
In December, Grassley nominated the students to fill available vacancies for the 2001/2002 school year at West Point Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.; the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.; and the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
According to Grassley, the highly competitive selection process makes it difficult to narrow the list of nominees each year. "The level of talented Iowa students vying for the few number of openings at our service academies never ceases to amaze me," Grassley said. "I'm always proud that I have the opportunity to acquaint myself with this group of high achievers."
Grassley praised the outstanding group of Iowa students who applied for academy nominations in past years and encouraged eligible students to consider submitting applications in the future. "U.S. military academies are an excellent option for students committed to pursuing a higher education," said Grassley.
Grassley expects additional academy appointments to be offered this year and will issue an announcement once an appointment has been offered.
