Each semester and twice during the summer, Grassley invites college-age Iowans to apply for internships in his Washington, D.C. office, and in any of his six state offices. According to Grassley, interns participate in a variety of activities and gain "valuable hands-on work experience." Interns are assigned to assist permanent staff members in the legislative, press, administrative, and computer areas of Grassley's office.
In addition, the Washington, D.C. interns enjoy opportunities to attend Congressional hearings on Capitol Hill, informational briefings at the Library of Congress, as well as lectures by Supreme Court Justices, White House Cabinet Members, Senators and Representatives.
"As an intern, students get a chance to see how our process of representative government works," said Grassley. "Working in a Senate office can enhance a college education and make students more competitive job applicants when they graduate. In fact, several of my current staff members are former interns."
For more information about internships, students can visit Grassley's website at http://www.senate.gov/grassley/intern.htm, or by E-mailing Senator Grassley at chuck_grassley@grassley.senate.gov.
"I encourage any student -- regardless of his or her college major -- to apply for a Congressional internship," Grassley said. "Exposure to this branch of government can enhance a student's understanding of our democracy and broaden one's perspective for the future."
Internship applications are also available in the placement offices of all Iowa colleges and the three state universities, as well as in Grassley's offices in Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Davenport, Des Moines, Sioux City, and Waterloo. A written request for an application may also be sent to: Senator Chuck Grassley, 135 Senate Hart Office Building, Washington, D.C. 20510-1501. Interns selected for the Spring 1998 program will work from late January through May.
