Grassley Announces Senate Youth Program Selection Process

Sen. Chuck Grassley announced that the United States Senate Youth Program has begun its statewide selection process. Two Iowa students will join 102 others next March 2-9 for the program's 40th Anniversary Washington Week.

The program of the United States Senate brings two students from each state, the District of Columbia and the Department of Defense Schools overseas to Washington, D.C. Student delegates will visit Capitol Hill, the White House, the Pentagon, State Department and the Supreme Court.

"The program allows students the opportunity to see all branches of the federal government in action," Grassley said. "Participants also will receive briefings from government leaders and elected officials."

Student delegates will each receive a $2,000 college scholarship. The leadership program is fully funded by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.

Delegate selection is coordinated by each state's chief school officer in cooperation with high school principals. Delegates must be junior and senior elected student officers for the 2001-2002 academic year and reside in the state where they attend school.

The selection deadline is September 15. Names of selected students will be announced December 13. Interested students should contact:
