"This state-of-the-art resource will put UNI on the map for weather forecasting," said Grassley. "The classroom will draw meteorology students from across the Midwest to learn about weather systems and their impact on everyday decisions."
Grassley, who was unable to attend today's ceremony due to votes in the Senate, has been a strong supporter of the STORM project. Over the past three years, Grassley has secured more than $1.8 million in federal funding for the project.
"Iowa's diverse weather systems and large agricultural industry make it necessary for us to better understand the relationship of weather to environmental practices," Grassley said. "The STORM project will help improve our understanding of this relationship and provide key learning experiences for students studying meteorology and related fields."
The STORM project develops education, service and research activities that relate weather information to people in agriculture, industry, education and state agencies. The project is a cooperative program between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and UNI.
