Grassley Asks President to Provide Disaster Assistance to Iowa

Sen. Chuck Grassley today asked President Bush to grant a request by the State to declare Iowa a major disaster area due to severe storms over the past several days.

"The federal aid would give residents and business owners the help they need to recover from the devastating effects of the heavy rains, hail, tornadoes, and flooding," Grassley said. "In the wake of continuing storms across Iowa, the President's action is necessary as quickly as possible."

Here is Grassley's letter.

May 24, 2004

The Honorable George W. Bush

President of the United States of America

The White House

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW

Washington, D.C. 20500

Dear Mr. President:

I respectfully ask that you grant the request made yesterday by Governor Vilsack for a declaration of a major disaster for the State of Iowa as a result of severe storms that produce heavy rains, hail, tornadoes, and flooding beginning May 19, 2004 and continuing. Many homes, businesses, parks, and bridges have been impacted by the severe weather. The damage resulting from these ongoing severe storms is beyond the capability of local and state governments to handle effectively and federal assistance is greatly needed. Due to the continuing nature of these storms and flooding, it is my understanding that further federal assistance may be requested at a later date.

Thank you for your prompt consideration of this urgent request.

Sincerely,

Charles E. Grassley

United States Senator
