WASHINGTON – Sen. Chuck
Grassley (R-Iowa) today joined Sens. John Thune (R-S.D.) and Amy Klobuchar
(D-Minn.) in reintroducing the
Adopt
GREET Act, which would require the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) to update its greenhouse gas modeling for
ethanol and biodiesel.
“I’ve
long been an advocate for clean energy and the enhanced use of biofuels. It’s
high time the EPA update its greenhouse gas modeling so we can see all the
benefits achieved through alternative energy,” Grassley said. “I’m proud to join some of my colleagues from the
Midwest who know firsthand how important the biofuels community is as they provide
thousands of quality jobs around the country while making our environment
better.”
This
legislation would require EPA to adopt the Argonne National Lab’s Greenhouse
Gases, Regulated Emissions and Energy Use in Transportation (GREET) Model for
both ethanol and biodiesel. EPA would then be required to update its modeling
every five years or report to Congress to affirm its modeling is current
or otherwise explain why no updates were made.
In
2019, Grassley and Durbin sent a
letter
to the EPA to update its outdated environmental analysis on ethanol and adopt
the GREET model. They also highlighted that updating the calculations would
ultimately improve foreign sales opportunities.
The Adopt GREET
Act is also cosponsored by Sens. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Mike Rounds
(R-S.D.) and Durbin.
