“Eighty years ago, tens of thousands of courageous American troops landed on the beaches of Normandy, France.
“They joined Allied forces to launch the greatest sea-borne military invasion in history.
“They put their lives on the line to fight for freedom and liberty. And they changed the course of human history.
“D-Day was a turning point in World War II.
“Within 100 days, the Allied forces drove Nazi troops out of France.
“Less than a year later, Hitler's reign of tyranny across Europe was over.
“The American soldiers who served on D-Day represent the best of our great nation.
“Whenever we have the opportunity, Barbara and I welcome veterans from the Honor Flights to the World War II Memorial here in Washington.
“We, or a member of my staff, are present personally to thank these veterans for their service.
“Today, and every day, Americans ought to reflect on the service and sacrifices of our World War Two veterans and the loved ones they left behind.
“We must never forget these heroes, and we must honor the legacy of freedom that they helped preserve for generations to come.
“May God bless our troops and God bless America.”
