Sen. Chuck Grassley's comprehensive bankruptcy reform bill, which President Clinton vetoed today, contained provisions to protect patients in health care businesses that file for bankruptcy. Grassley made the following comment on the President's veto of the patient protection provisions.
"Thousands of patients tie their fates to health care providers, yet federal law currently makes no consideration at all for patients' well-being in the event of a bankruptcy. At least once, nursing home residents literally were evicted onto the street by a bankruptcy trustee. That could happen again because President Clinton vetoed my bill. My legislation would have closed this dangerous gap in patient protection. Instead, patients will remain at the mercy of bankruptcy trustees."
