Here is a written statement.
“The President tonight put forward a multi-pronged approach to help the Iraq government take control of its country. The military, political and economic components are necessary for success – we’ve already learned that one without the other simply won’t work. Now we'll see if the Iraqi leadership has the commitment and political will to make this campaign successful. This is their last best chance for our help to create a peaceful society. It’s time they step up and demonstrate quickly the ability to take responsibility for the security and governing of their own country.
“I understand the skepticism and apprehension among Americans. But, we also can’t forget that we expect the government to protect us from another 9-11, and that means dismantling terrorist networks and activities in Iraq and around the world for the sake of our own security.
“Most importantly, I remain committed to supporting our troops. Congress gave the President the authority to go to war. As long as our troops are in harm’s way, whether or not Congress agrees with the President’s tactics, support for the troops ought to be non-negotiable.”
