Grassley, Domenici to Highlight Pollution Preventing Partnership, Ag-Based Product

Sens. Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Pete Domenici of New Mexico will hold a news conference on Wednesday afternoon to discuss a cooperative effort that is helping to expand the use of bio-based products.

The April 21st news conference will begin at 1 pm (ET) in Dirksen 138.

On Wednesday morning, Sandia National Laboratories of Albuquerque, New Mexico, will receive a pollution prevention award from the Department of Energy for its conversion to a soybean- based hydraulic fluid developed at the University of Northern Iowa. The Ag-Based Industrial Lubricants (ABIL) Research Program is located in Waverly, Iowa.

The award is the first that will be given in a category described as "Environmental Preferability/Non-Hazardous Waste." It recognizes innovative action in pollution prevention. The Sandia lab has used the trademarked BioSoy oil since 1996, and has converted 99 percent of its ground equipment.

Representatives from both the lab and the ABIL program will join Domenici and Grassley at the Wednesday news conference to discuss the effort that led to this award and the potential for bio-based products.
