The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on Saturday released $900 million in homeless grants that had been approved for use during fiscal year 2000 by Congress. The federal housing money will be distributed to more than 2,000 local projects for the homeless in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
"These federal dollars will help replenish the resources of Iowa homeless and emergency shelters," said Grassley. "For those of us with a roof over our heads, let's be thankful for our good fortunes. And throughout the New Year, families and individual Iowans should remember to make a difference in their own communities. Through volunteerism and food, clothing or cash donations, let's help those who have fallen on hard times to move beyond their misfortune and achieve independence."
According to Grassley, the following have qualified to receive over $1.6 million in federal aid under HUD's Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG): Davenport ($75,000); Des Moines ($180,000); Sioux City ($83,000); and the Iowa State program ($1,321,000).
In addition, six Iowa cities will receive almost $4.3 million in federal funding under the Supportive Housing Program. This program is designed to assist homeless providers to acquire, build, renovate and operate facilities that serve homeless families and individuals and offer housing and supportive services.
