Hearing:"The Domestic Consequences of Heroin Use"Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control
Date/Time:Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at 10 a.m.
Location:628 Dirksen Senate Office Building
Description:Their stories are truly heartbreaking. Julie began sniffing heroin as a 16-year-old high student and was eventually arrested for possession. Phillip started using at 14-years-old and overdosed at least five times in seven years. Both are now getting their lives back on track in rehabilitation.
Because of the stories and studies that highlight the rising problem of heroin use in the suburbs and rural communities, Sen. Chuck Grassley, Chairman of the Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control announced today that he will hold a hearing on the issue.
"People falsely believe heroin abuse is just an inner-city problem," he said. "But the facts show it is devastating many more communities. We're talking about white-collar professionals from affluent suburbs or kids from small farm towns who are also caught in the grip of one of the most addicting drugs."
